Make Your Own Laundry Soap for Cheap!

For my first project of my Don't Be Broke month, I decided to make my own laundry soap. I had found this particular recipe on Pinterest a few months back and have been slowly gathering the items to make it since. I used coupons where I could and bought all of the ingredients at Wal Mart where I got 10% off. All in all, it cost me around $20 to complete my laundry soap with the promise that it will last a year. Here are the ingredients:

4 lbs Arm and Hammer Baking Soda
1 box of Washing Soda
1 box of Borax
1 box of oxy clean
1 bottle of Purex Crystals
2 bars of Zote

To make the soap, I first had to grate the Zote soap. I used a regular  cheese grater to do this and it was not too difficult. It took me about 20 minutes to grate both bars of soap and I did it while watching tv so time went by pretty quickly. Here is what Zote looks like pre-grating:

I enjoyed the Zote because its pink and it smells like clean laundry, my favorite!
After I finished grating, here is what it looked like:.

Once you have your cheese grated, you just have to mix everything together. Probably the easiest way to do this is to get a giant bowl or bucket and start layering the ingredients little by little, then mixing it all together with a big spoon. Once everything was mixed together, I used the Purex crystals bottle to store some of the soap in as well as the oxy clean tub. The rest went into giant glass masion jars I had. This recipe makes a TON of soap. I was having trouble finding a place to put it all!
The great thing about this is that it only takes 2 TBLS per load. If you reuse the Purex bottle, the purple cap on top has a measuring cup in it already! Easy peezy!

Anyways, here is the final result of just a little bit of work.

I encourage everyone to make this. It is super easy and works really well, plus it helps to keep the costs down since laundry soap is so expensive these days.

hope you enjoyed the tutorial!
